Daniel turned the corner towards both the stairwell and the bathrooms. He heard footsteps ascending and knew Rex and Tina were on their way up. Without hesitation, Daniel stepped over the velvet rope blocking the staircase and hurried up the first flight and out of view of anybody coming out of the bathroom.

Rex and Tina had slowed their ascent for Daniel to catch up.

“All okay?” Rex whispered as Daniel hurried up the stairs towards them.

“Yes,” Daniel said, “but I saw our friend, Pierre. It was cryptic, but we need to be careful.”

The three continued up the stairs to the second level.

Once there, Rex pointed down the short hallway to a door and said, “That’s Norsemen Group’s exhibition room.”

Daniel left Rex and Tina behind as he silently padded up to the door. He glanced to his right and down a hallway perpendicular to other exhibition rooms, but they appeared empty, still too early. He pressed his ear to the door and heard nothing. The women’s restroom was adjacent.

Daniel rested his hand on the handle and pressed.

It didn’t move.

Locked.

Daniel hurried back to Rex and Tina to concoct a plan.

When he reached them, they heard footsteps coming up the stairs towards them.

Daniel looked down and saw a security guard in white. Behind him were a man and a woman, speaking in Russian.

“Two of those are Russians from Paris,” Daniel whispered to Rex and Tina. The security guard called out in French.

“We’ll distract them and throw them off the path,” Tina said as she descended the stairs. Rex followed Tina as she called out in broken French to the security guard.

Playing the dumb and lost Americans, Daniel thought. That should get the security guard away, but I’m not sure about the Russians.

Daniel decided to hide in the men’s restroom and collect himself for a few moments. Daniel hurried in and squatted on a toilet in a stall to conceal himself.

He tried to conjure a way into the Norsemen Group’s room.

If I had brought a lock-picking set, the guard surely would have taken it at the door, Daniel reminded himself.

The restroom was eerily silent. He sensed the thumping of music from the masquerade ball above on the third floor.

What if I’m too late and Richard already delivered the flash drive? Daniel considered.

Daniel heard a nearby door shut and footsteps coming towards the bathroom. He braced himself for the Russians to enter and discover him. But instead, the footsteps changed tone as they took to the stairs.

Richard! Daniel realized.

He exited the stall and silently stepped out of the restroom. After carefully letting the door shut, he went to the stairs. He heard the steps going up, not down.

Richard must have just come out of the Norsemen Group’s room, or another room, Daniel realized.

Daniel peered up the stairs and between the railings to catch sight of the footsteps’ source. He didn’t get a good look at the face from below, but the man’s build matched that of Richard Strecker.

Daniel crept up the stairs. If he caught Richard at the top, he could overpower him, drag him to the nearby bathroom, and take the flash drive.
